Learn how to rig and animate a simple stickman using Puppet Pins, keyframes, and motion blur in After Effects.
Introduction
Animating a stickman in After Effects is quick and beginner-friendly. Using the Puppet Position Pin Tool, you can create natural bending movement for arms, legs, and the body, then easily animate walking, running, dancing, or fighting motions. Follow the steps below to set up your stickman rig and keyframe smooth animation.
Step 1: Import Your Stickman Image
Go to File > Import > File and import your stickman graphic. Any simple PNG silhouette works well.
Step 2: Create a New Composition
Create a new composition and drag your stickman image onto the timeline.

Step 3: Remove the Background (If Needed)
If your stickman has a solid background:
Go to the Effects & Presets panel
Search for Linear Color Key
Apply it to your stickman layer
Use the eyedropper to remove the unwanted background color
This leaves a clean stickman shape ready for animation.
Step 4: Add Puppet Position Pins
Double-click the stickman layer in the timeline to open it in the Layer Panel. Choose the Puppet Position Pin Tool (Ctrl/Cmd + P), then place pins on:
Neck
Elbows
Wrists
Hips
Knees
Ankles
These pins will allow you to bend and animate each joint naturally.
Step 5: Animate the Stickman
Select a pin and move it inside the Layer Panel
Move the CTI (Current Time Indicator) forward on the timeline
Adjust the pins again to create the next pose
After Effects automatically creates keyframes each time you move a puppet pin
Continue moving forward in time and posing your stickman until the animation is complete.

Step 6: Return to the Composition and Add Motion Blur
Go back to the Composition Panel. Enable Motion Blur for the stickman layer (and the master Motion Blur switch). This adds smooth, realistic movement to the animation.
Tip: Speed Up or Slow Down Your Animation
To change the overall timing:
Press “U” to reveal all keyframes
Select all keyframes
Hold Alt/Option
Drag the last keyframe:
Left → Animation becomes faster
Right → Animation becomes slower
This is the easiest way to retime puppet animation.
Step 7: Preview and Refine
Press Spacebar to preview your animation. Adjust keyframes, pin positions, and timing until the stickman moves smoothly and naturally.
Conclusion
Animating a stickman with Puppet Pins in After Effects is simple, flexible, and perfect for quick character animation. By placing pins strategically and using motion blur, you can create believable movements — from walking cycles to dynamic action poses.
