How to Animate Curtains in After Effects

Learn how to create and animate realistic opening curtains in After Effects using gradients, Fractal Noise, Bezier Warp, and pre-composing.

Introduction

You can create a fully animated curtain effect in After Effects using only built-in tools — no external textures needed. With gradients, noise, and Bezier Warp, you can simulate fabric depth, folds, and natural opening motion. Follow the steps below to design and animate your curtain from scratch.

Step 1: Create a New Composition

Go to Composition > New Composition and set the size and duration you need. Step 2: Create a Solid Layer

Go to Layer > New > Solid and choose any base color. This solid will become your curtain. Step 3: Add 4-Color Gradient

Search for 4-Color Gradient in the Effects & Presets panel and apply it to the solid. Set the colors:

Use three deep red tones
Set one slightly lighter red tone to create fabric highlights

This builds the basic curtain look.

Step 4: Add CC Vignette

Apply CC Vignette to darken the edges and add more depth to the curtain.

Step 5: Add Fractal Noise for Fabric Texture

Apply Fractal Noise and adjust these settings:

Fractal Type: Small Bumps
Contrast: 76
Uniform Scaling: Off
Scale Width: 39
Scale Height: 631
Complexity: 2
Blending Mode: Overlay
This creates vertical fabric folds.

Step 6: Add Noise for Realism

Apply Noise and set:

Amount of Noise: 11%

This removes flat color and adds subtle grain.

Step 7: Pre-Compose the Curtain

Select the solid → Right-click > Pre-compose → choose Move all attributes. Name the pre-comp Curtain.

Step 8: Animate the Curtain with Bezier Warp

Apply Bezier Warp to the pre-comp. Place the CTI at the start of the comp and enable animation for:

Top Left Tangent
Top Right Tangent
Right Top Vertex
Right Top Tangent
Right Bottom Tangent
Bottom Right Vertex
Bottom Right Tangent
Bottom Left Tangent

Animate:

At 0 seconds: Curtain fully closed
At 1 second: Curtain halfway open
At 2 seconds: Curtain fully open (only covering about 1/6 of the composition)

Move the Bezier points directly in the Composition panel to shape the opening motion.

Step 9: Apply Easy Ease and Refine Timing

Select all keyframes → press F9 for Easy Ease. Adjust spacing of keyframes to create smoother, more natural movement. Step 10: Duplicate the Curtain for the Other Side

Duplicate the curtain pre-comp layer. Open Scale and unlink the proportions. Set the X Scale to –100 to flip the curtain horizontally.

Step 11: Preview and Add Motion Blur (Optional)

Press Spacebar to preview. For extra realism, apply CC Force Motion Blur to smooth the fabric motion.

Conclusion

With gradients, noise textures, and Bezier Warp, you can create a realistic curtain animation entirely inside After Effects. This technique works great for intro scenes, theater-themed videos, transitions, or dramatic title reveals.
