How to Animate Drums in After Effects

Learn how to build and animate a 3D drum and drumsticks inside After Effects using shape layers, extrusion, and looping motion for a realistic drumming effect.

Introduction

In this tutorial, you will create a simple 3D drum and two animated drumsticks directly inside After Effects — no external models needed. Using the Advanced 3D Renderer, shape layers, extrusion depth, and looping expressions, you can build a seamless repeating drumming animation perfect for motion graphics, music videos, and animated icons.

Step 1: Create a New Composition

Go to Composition > New Composition. In the 3D Renderer section, set:

Renderer: Advanced 3D

This enables shape extrusion and real 3D rotations. Step 2: Create the Drum Body

Use the Ellipse Tool (Q) to draw a circle. Choose:
Fill: Any preferred color
Stroke: Any color
Stroke Width: 50
Make the layer 3D, then open the layer properties:
Extrusion Depth: 200
Orientation: Adjust until it visually resembles a drum body with visible depth.

This creates a 3D cylindrical drum. Step 3: Create the First Drumstick

Use the Pen Tool (G) to draw a straight line (this will be the drumstick). Set:

Fill: None
Stroke Width: 26
Line Cap: Round Cap
Line Join: Round Join
End Length: 100 (in Trim Paths if needed)
Enable 3D for the layer.
Then open the layer properties:
Extrusion Depth: 27
Adjust Orientation so the stick looks like a real angled drumstick.

Step 4: Add a Rounded Tip to the Drumstick

Expand the drumstick layer: Next to Contents, click Add > Ellipse. Adjust:

Size: to create a rounded tip
Position: move it to the end of the stick
Tweak Stroke Width again so the proportions look realistic.

This now becomes a complete 3D drumstick with a rounded head.

Step 5: Duplicate and Position the Second Drumstick

Right-click the drumstick layer: Transform > Center Anchor Point in Layer Content. Now duplicate the stick:

Press Cmd/Ctrl + D
Move the second stick into its correct position above the drum.

This gives you two 3D sticks ready for animation.Step 6: Animate the Drumsticks

You will animate the Orientation of each stick. Example animation:

Frame 0: both sticks touching the drum
Frame 4: Stick 1 hits the drum, Stick 2 lifts upward
Frame 8: Stick 2 hits the drum, Stick 1 lifts upward

Tip: Use the 3D rotation arrows (X, Y, Z widgets) instead of typing numeric values. This gives smoother and more natural movement.

Step 7: Add Easy Ease

Select the keyframes → Press F9 (Easy Ease) This smooths out the drumming motion.Step 8: Add a Loop Expression

To create a continuous drumming animation:

Hold Alt/Option
Click the Orientation stopwatch on both drumsticks
Enter: loopOutDuration(type = “cycle”, duration = 0)

This makes the drumming repeat endlessly.

Step 9: Preview and Final Adjustments

Press Spacebar to preview.

Conclusion

With shape layers, 3D extrusion, and looping expressions, you can easily build a polished 3D drumming animation in After Effects — no external assets required. This technique is great for music visuals, motion design elements, educational videos, or stylized rhythm animations.
