Learn how to create a realistic plant growth animation in After Effects using masks, CC Bend It, and simple timing techniques.
Introduction
Animating plant growth is a great way to add life and organic motion to your scenes. With simple masking techniques and the CC Bend It effect, you can create a believable plant-growing animation directly in After Effects — no plugins required.
Step 1: Import Your Plant Image
Go to File > Import > File and import your plant image. Drag it onto the timeline.
Step 2: Remove the Background (Optional)
If your image has a visible background, it’s best to remove it for easier animation. Apply Linear Color Key from the Effects & Presets panel and use the Eyedropper to remove the background color.
Step 3: Create the Background Layer
Duplicate the plant layer. Turn off the visibility (eye icon) of the top layer. Rename the bottom layer Background. Using the Pen Tool (G), create a mask around the plant so that only the ground (or pot) remains visible. Set the Mask Mode to Subtract.
Step 4: Prepare the Leaves Layer
Duplicate the top plant layer and rename it Leaves. Turn off its visibility for now.

Step 5: Mask the Plant Stem
On the middle plant layer, use the Pen Tool (G) to create a mask around the plant stem. Set Mask Mode = Add. This layer will be used to animate the stem growth.
Step 6: Animate the Stem Growth
Apply CC Bend It from the Effects & Presets panel to the stem layer. Animate the Bend value:
At the start of the composition: Bend = 250
Around the middle of the composition: Bend = 0
This creates the illusion of the stem growing upward from the ground.

Step 7: Copy the Stem Mask to the Leaves Layer
Copy the mask from the stem layer and paste it onto the Leaves layer. This keeps the leaves aligned correctly with the stem.

Step 8: Animate the Leaves Growth
On the Leaves layer, animate Mask Expansion:
Around the middle of the composition: Mask Expansion = -356
10 frames later: Mask Expansion = 1571
This reveals the leaves as if they are growing out of the stem.
Step 9: Smooth the Animation
Select all keyframes and press F9 to apply Easy Ease. Refine the timing using the Graph Editor for more natural movement.
Step 10: Add Motion Blur for Realism
Apply CC Force Motion Blur to the Plant and Leaves layers. This adds subtle blur that enhances the realism of the growth animation.

Step 11: Preview and Refine
Press Spacebar to preview your animation. Adjust bend values, mask timing, or easing until the plant growth feels smooth and organic.
Conclusion
By combining masks, CC Bend It, and thoughtful timing, you can create a natural-looking plant growth animation in After Effects. This technique works well for explainer videos, nature visuals, and stylized motion graphics.
