Introduction
Creating a circle trim path animation in After Effects is a great way to design dynamic loading indicators, outlines, or motion graphics. This simple technique uses the Trim Paths feature to reveal or draw your circle smoothly over time.
Step 1: Create a New Composition
Go to Composition > New Composition and set your desired resolution and duration. This will be your workspace for creating the animated circle.

Step 2: Draw the Circle
Select the Ellipse Tool (Q) from the toolbar. Hold “Ctrl/Cmd + Shift” while dragging to create a perfect circle. In the top bar, set Fill to None, choose a Stroke Color, and adjust the Stroke Width to around 11 px.

Step 3: Animate with Trim Paths
Expand the shape layer properties in the timeline. Next to Contents, click Add > Trim Paths. Move the CTI (Current Time Indicator) to the start of the composition and set End to 0 by clicking the stopwatch to create a keyframe. Move the CTI to the middle of the timeline and change End to 100 — the circle will now draw in. Then, move the CTI forward a few frames, click the stopwatch for Start, set it to 0, and at the end of the timeline, set Start to 100. This creates a smooth “draw in and out” effect.

Step 4: Add Easy Ease for Smooth Motion
Select all keyframes, right-click, and choose Keyframe Assistant > Easy Ease. This makes the animation more natural and fluid.
Step 5: Preview and Adjust
Press the Spacebar to preview your animation. Adjust the timing or stroke width if needed for a better visual result.
Conclusion
Animating a circle with Trim Paths in After Effects is quick and effective.
You can use this method to create stylish loading icons, logo outlines, or simple motion elements that add energy and polish to your projects.
