Introduction to Loud Distortion Effects
Distorted loud sound effects are often used in meme edits or dramatic video moments to emphasize intensity or humor. In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to increase volume, enhance bass, and safely distort sound in After Effects — without causing unpleasant noise or damage to speakers or hearing.
Step 1: Import Your Audio
Go to File > Import > File and select the audio clip you want to use. Drag it to the timeline to start editing your sound directly in After Effects.
Step 2: Adjust Audio Levels
Select your audio layer and press “L” to open the Audio Levels property. Set the Audio Levels value higher (around +6 to +12 dB) to make the sound louder. Press “LL” to view the waveform and visually monitor how strong the sound is — avoid clipping (flat tops in the waveform).
Step 3: Add Bass and Treble Enhancement
From the Effects & Presets panel, search for Bass & Treble and apply it to your audio layer twice. In the Effect Controls panel, increase Bass to around +100 to give the sound more impact. This creates a bold, bass-heavy distortion effect often used in meme-style edits.

Step 4: Preview and Adjust Safely
Play your composition to preview the sound. Make sure your speaker volume is low during testing. Adjust Bass or Audio Levels if the sound becomes too harsh or distorted.
Conclusion
By combining volume boost and Bass & Treble effects, you can easily create a strong, exaggerated audio effect in After Effects. Always work at a safe volume level and monitor your waveform to prevent audio clipping. This technique is perfect for energetic memes or impactful video edits.
